The holidays are a time of celebration, generosity and giving. It is also a time of consumption, consumerism and greater environmental impact. After the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is celebrated every November, as an annual one-day movement that encourages people to do good.
Like the sentiment behind days like Giving Tuesday, I agree that small actions can lead to big change, but I believe that commitment and consistency matter.
Since I started my company, I have been on a mission to spark joy in the everyday lives of others.
That’s why I’m a proud 1% for the Planet member and donate more than 1% of sales (not profits) to environmental charities. It’s also why earlier this month I introduced the Good Karma Giving Program, where $1 from every candle sold is donated to charity, with a focus on environmental and social causes.
Each month a new charitable or non-profit organization will be selected to benefit from the Good Karma Giving Program so that I can use my business as a small but mighty force for good. I am so inspired by the incredible work being done by organizations across Canada to have a positive change for people and this beautiful planet we call home.
To kick off the Good Karma Giving Program, $1 from every candle sold will benefit Second Harvest until December 31, 2022. Second Harvest finds surplus, edible food that businesses can’t use, and through their food recovery network, gets it to the people in our communities who need it. Their work tackles the intersections of climate change, food waste and hunger. Currently, every $1 donated can provide enough food for four meals.
Being a 1% for the Planet member, donating 1% of all sales, and donating $1 for every candle sold, is not only the right thing to do but it is also the least that I can do as a small business. As a steward for the change that we need and the world that I want, I view it as a core responsibility to do good through Bright Candle Co.
